The Importance of Messaging in Social Media

The whole idea that most people grasp out of social media is that they need a bigger following.  I see a lot of blog posts that write about getting more followers and driving more traffic…heck, I’ve wrote those posts myself.

But there is a very important aspect in your social media following that you may not be doing!

Why Contact Is Important

People follow you for a reason.

You have impacted their brain in some way through either a blog post or a social update in one way or another. Somehow or another, social media direct message you have given them something to think about, or they just really like you!

So they hit that “follow” button.

That’s great! That’s exactly what you are wanting in order to build a great following for your blog.

However some people miss the most important aspect of the action of the follow.

It’s the contact.

Now I will be the first to admit that I have not spoken to every follower that came along.

At first, because I didn’t know any better.

Now I try to contact each individual follower in some way or another. Doing this builds more integrity for your site and it helps the new follower remember why they followed you in the first place.

You confirm some things for them when you reach out to them.

Tips To Reach Out To Someone On Social Media

Of course, the best policy to contact someone is when they first follow you.

One question that leaves people wondering is the fact of how can they actually monitor everyone that follows them on Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. You should really read my post on managing your social media profiles for a list of great tools that you can use that will do the monitoring for you.

Using something like this is going to take a lot of the headache out of searching for new followers. Especially on Twitter. The tools that I use monitor each follower closely and then send them a direct message when they actually do follow me. The one above is for my Twitter account and, if you follow me, you will get a greeting and an invitation to connect to another social profile that I have.

It’s really up to you on what kind of message that you want to send them. I wouldn’t suggest trying to sell them anything or sending them directly to an affiliate link. That’s just going to create disdain and eventually lead to them unfollowing you!

Once you have contacted them, you shouldn’t just forget about them. People will remember you better when you keep the discussion going.

One trick that I do is I take full advantage of Tweet Deck. This allows me to see when someone has retweeted me or just simply tweeted one of my posts. When I get the notification, I manually take the time to reply to them and thank them for the share! It’s kinda like a pat on the back for what they’ve just done. It has been working for me really well here lately.

Ok, So Then What??

Yeah, it’s kinda hard to keep everyone in check with discussions. That’s why I use It’s a dashboard kind of like Tweet Deck, but it let’s you stay connected to your influencer’s and power users. It brings your Twitter account into perspective and allows you to view who is influential, a supporter, a retweeter, etc.

As you can see above, this shows my high value members/followers.  To keep engaged with them, has allowed me to tweet to them all at once in the lower right of the screen.  This is graded every day and there is different one’s at different intervals. is a great way to stay engaged with your followers on Twitter.

Your Turn:

Staying engaged is how you’re going to be successful with your blog.  As we discussed in the Google Hangout the other day, some people have a bad taste in their mouth about social automators and what they do.  I believe that people have a perception of what they “think” it’s supposed to do.  However in a real sense, being able to send automated direct messages and schedule social posting is going to be key to freeing up your time to stay engaged with your followers and friends.

Have you tried any social tools to improve your social media presence online?  If not, how are you managing your DM’s when people follow you?  How are you supposed to stay engaged with people without using any type of tool?

You can’t do this alone!  Take advantage of the tools that are there for you to use!

It will only enhance your online experience with others!

  1. RSS rocks! Maybe Google +, too. But not Facebook. This is Utopia and Neverland. People waste their time without nothing you, that is not good. So I also have Twitter.

  2. Twitter: is such a time saver! Thanks for turning me on to it Wade. Before even with Hoot Suite or Social Bro (which is great for managing lists/following btw) it was a pain to respond/interact with people!

You’re right Wade. It takes us much time if we must serve or reply DM of our followers one by one. And we won’t have enough time to do that. There must be any tool we can use to ease our jobs. The tools you mention above can be good options for active bloggers.

  4. Yes if you will update and share something on regularly basis then you can see how you will get best result in that. So go ahead and get your milestones.

  5. Thanks for the article, Wade. I’ve been doing that for some time.

Now, can I ask if the same speaks for brands? I think typically brands need to maintain a balance of their professional outlook and humane persona. Tweeps like following individuals more than brands, and especially so for small businesses. How’d you recommend a small/medium business approach using Twitter? Should Brand X still maintain their Brand name @X on twitter and in their bio, write that person @Y is in charge of tweets? Does it help?

Social Media is really a time eater Wade. One of the reasons we are unproductive is this new technology. Have tools that help maximize time is crucial. Without a tool like, (and others) it will be very hard to keep to these simple tasks.

Good to read this from you bro

BTW I’m back from where I went. Will now have time to engage

  7. Hi Wade,
Social media has become a great platform now a days, and the messaging part is similar to the essence of a flower. Messaging is the only thing, which keeps the readers engaged and in touch with the blogger. Establishing one to one connection can add the personal touch. Thanks for sharing the valuable tips.
